Who is artist Lara Salmon? Share with us a few things about you and your work in general.
I’m a performance artist from Los Angeles, California. My practice is body-based and site-specific, using action to express personal position within socio-political narratives. I came into this type of work in my early twenties while studying in Beirut, Lebanon. A lifelong struggle with chronic pain causes me to see the world through physical limits. Thus using my body as a vessel with which to create meaning resonates strongly. I have produced projects in the U.S., Germany, Lebanon, Morocco, Cuba, and now Cyprus.
What was your reaction when you heard that you were awarded?
I was excited! I still feel an immense sense of gratitude for everyone that helped me bring “Saline dissonance” to fruition.
The greatest honor of this award has been seeing people’s interest in my work. I always endeavor to have an audience outside of the art world, and the recognition I received from the Grand Prix made this possible in Cyprus. People approached me many times in the following weeks to talk about the performance and what it meant to them.
Tell us a few words about your awarded performance.
“Saline dissonance” marked an arrival for me. My great-grandfather was the director of Cyprus Mines Corporation 100 years ago, and I am the first member of my family to return to the island in order to address this history. In this performance I began coming to terms with the loaded context of my family history. My hope is that it was the first of several site-specific performances on Cyprus.
What was your overall impression about Larnaca Biennale 2021?
Larnaca Biennale 2021 was a wonderful experience! Maria, Mike and Vassilis were an outstanding team. They created a lively and professional environment for the participating artists. I enjoyed the unique opportunity to meet artists from many backgrounds and to be part of an international art event. I will remember the opening week of the Biennale for a long time! I was also impressed by their effort to make my otherwise ephemeral work enduring. The Biennale organizers placed a plaque at my performance location and screened its video documentation in the main gallery.
A message you would like to send to artists that will apply in the future for participation in the Larnaca Biennale.
I highly recommend applying to the Larnaca Biennale. Their review process is professional and fair. If I am to give any advice, it is to consider the context and location of Cyprus in the submission. And if your work is accepted, go to Larnaca! The Biennale team organizes an amazing opening week of fun events and networking opportunities.
