“A name could be signified by a memory and in turn prompt a story, it can compose identity, or conjure character. This project’s aim is a group exhibition, in a common site in Cyprus, but also a name that has existed for hundreds of years, thinking about the possibilities of resonating with foreign perspectives.
Artists from diverse backgrounds will engage with local communities and look beyond borders. The artists not only work in local contexts, but also trying to reply to the contemporary dilemmas common to the global.
Artworks begin from the relationships developed in Cyprus, exploring various dimensions like the role of the sea, geopolitics, historical diversity, local industry, and traditional crafts. From the artist’s memories and experiences in his own social relationships, he summons different stories.
These stories look at the relationships and tensions hidden by the grand narrative, such as the emotions erased by history, the time lost in the wear, the determination to preserve life in the conflicts and Political wrangling, and so on. They are ambiguous, irrelevant to directivity, but discordant sounds, ubiquitous, and real, mixed.
The repeated waves are like the cancellation and return of history, and we hope to add diverse faces to the ocean of history through the flexibility and imagination characteristic of art.” – Shaoan Huang
