SUMMARY:Home Away From Home
DESCRIPTION:“What is it that constitutes a home\, beyond just bricks and mortar? Over the years and around the world\, we ‘ve grappled back and forth with the many meanings of this word. For this biennale\, I ‘ve set myself the task of unpacking notions of home and belonging – ideas that have shaped our lives and identities since birth. It will be filled with stories\, some particular\, some entirely universal\, which all give rise to our sense of self. I ‘m thrilled to extend the invitation to artists\, creators and makers of all varieties to join the conversation; submitting new propositions or revisiting existing work that considers this important theme.” Yev Kravt\, Curator Larnaca Biennale 2023 \nThis year’s curational theme\, “Home Away from Home”\, conceived by curator Yev Kravt prompted artists from around the world to submit their proposals\, resulting in the selection of 101 artworks that encapsulate the essence of the theme.\nLarnaca Biennale 2023 invites you to a kaleidoscope of diverse artistic stories weaving tales of identity\, belonging\, displacement\, and the quest for home in our evolving world. \nExhibition Venues \nMunicipal Art Gallery entrance free\nMonday – Friday 9:00-13:00 & 15:00-18:00\nSaturday 10:00-13:00 & 15:30-18:30\nSunday 15:30-18:30\n→ Map \nPierides Museum entrance free\nMonday- Thursday 09:00-16:00\nFriday 09:00-13:00\nSaturday 09:00-13:00 & 15:30-18:30\nSunday 15:30-18:30\n→ Map \nLarnaka Municipal Market entrance free \nMonday- Sunday 10:00 – 18:00\n1st Floor staircase and elevator access\n→ Map \nEVOHK – Artist Run Space entrance free\nMonday- Friday 9:00-13:00 & 15:00 – 18:00\nSaturday 10:00-13:00 & 15:30-18:30\nSunday 15:30-18:30\n→ Map \nLarnaka Medieval Castle entrance €2.50\nMonday – Friday 08:00-17:00\nSaturday – Sunday 09:30-17:00\n→ Map \nThe Living Room entrance free * MAIN INFO CENTER\nMonday – Sunday 10:00-18:00\n→ Map

SUMMARY:Public Performance : Part of the Main Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:17:00 – 17:30 @ Zouhouri Square \nSilkworm\nPerformance \nAine Nakamura\nJapan/USA\, 1982 \nIn this performance\, Aine weaves together the stories of silkworms\, delicate fabrics and her great-grandmother’s strength in the face of adversity. Drawing from her experiences growing up in two countries\, Japan and the USA\, she explores the notion of home as a transnational individual and the cultural challenges one encounters.\nThe artist creates a space where she can fly and voice her identity\, challenging the perception of being seen as a delicate ‘oriental’ woman. Fabric and paper will accompany her body\, protecting it as she transforms the space around her. \nDoes social perception define us? \nThe performances are part of the Larnaca Biennale 2023 Main Exhibition “Home Away from Home”.

SUMMARY:Screenings : Part of Main Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:20:00 – 20:45 Short Film and Q&A \nYaroslava Krutova Ukraine\, 1993\nWHEN TOMATO BECOMES A PIECE OF CAKE\nVideo \nDisplaced by the unfolding situation in Ukraine\, Yaroslava’s evocative video piece reveals her journey of adjustment and introspection in the Netherlands. The work bridges two contrasting worlds: her tangible daily existence and a profound internal space shaped by her displacement. As the main character\, she navigates life with a Dutch host family\, leading to shifts in habits\, appearance\, and self-perception\, and an ensuing inner conflict. \nSound plays a critical role\, capturing fluctuating emotions and echoing traditional Ukrainian melodies\, symbolizing the cultural heritage she brings to her new environment. This piece raises questions about the nature of ‘home’: is it a place or an emotional state? In seeking a fresh identity in unfamiliar surroundings\, is there a risk of losing oneself? \nHow does one redefine ‘home’ amidst the tumult of displacement? \n——————— \n21:00 – 21:45 Short Film \nMarina Dumont-Anastassiadou France/Greece\, 1993\nScreen Short Film Marina Dumont +Q/A @ Living Room \nThe Colours of Trees\nFilm \nD \nIn a world grappling with climate disasters and societal injustices\, two women navigate the challenges of invisibility and isolation. Marina’s work interlaces the harsh truths of our environment — forest fires in Greece and floods in Germany — with the personal struggles of women seeking connection in times of crisis. \nThrough documentary-style elements\, the film underscores the parallels between societal neglect and our planet’s distress\, suggesting that solidarity might be the key to overcoming both. \nHow do you maintain your sense of “home” in a world constantly threatened by looming disasters? \n  \nThe screenings are part of the Larnaca Biennale 2023 Main Exhibition ‘Home Away from Home’ \nLimited seats.
