DESCRIPTION:“What is it that constitutes a home\, beyond just bricks and mortar? Over the years and around the world\, we ‘ve grappled back and forth with the many meanings of this word. For this biennale\, I ‘ve set myself the task of unpacking notions of home and belonging – ideas that have shaped our lives and identities since birth. It will be filled with stories\, some particular\, some entirely universal\, which all give rise to our sense of self. SUMMARY:What will Your Home be if you Don't Remember it?
DESCRIPTION:Children’s Art Exhibition on Alzheimer’s Disease and lecture by Dr. Andreas Chadjikyprianou\n and lecture by Dr. Andreas Chadjikyprianou \nConsider a treasure chest full of priceless memories. What if someone accidentally placed the key inside the treasure chest and you couldn’t remember where the key was or what was inside? This is similar to what happens to people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. It has an impact on the ability of mostly elderly people to remember things. It’s the equivalent of forgetting where you put your toys or what you had for breakfast. But imagine you’ve forgotten where you live or who your family is.That would be terrifying!  \nAlzheimer is a disease that affects one of the human body’s most important parts\, the mind\, or as it is scientifically known\, the brain.  \nGuided by their creativity\, children ages 7-15 have been asked to paint and create what their home would be like if they didn’t remember it. What would their mind look like if it was worn out? What does a sufferer think? How are their brain neurone’s working? \nAfter the exhibition\, Dr. Andreas Chadjikyprianou will give a 20 minute presentation on Alzheimer’s disease. Participants will explore the relationship between Alzheimer’s and dementia\, learn what happens in a brain affected by Alzheimer’s\, learn about risk factors and receive helpful information. Live discussion and reception will follow.

DESCRIPTION:Mixed Media Exhibition: A group show by six Asian Artists \n“A name could be signified by a memory and in turn prompt a story\, it can compose identity\, or conjure character. This project’s aim is a group exhibition\, in a common site in Cyprus\, but also a name that has existed for hundreds of years\, thinking about the possibilities of resonating with foreign perspectives.\nArtists from diverse backgrounds will engage with local communities and look beyond borders. The artists not only work in local contexts\, but also trying to reply to the contemporary dilemmas common to the global.\nArtworks begin from the relationships developed in Cyprus\, exploring various dimensions like the role of the sea\, geopolitics\, historical diversity\, local industry\, and traditional crafts. From the artist’s memories and experiences in his own social relationships\, he summons different stories.\nThese stories look at the relationships and tensions hidden by the grand narrative\, such as the emotions erased by history\, the time lost in the wear\, the determination to preserve life in the conflicts and Political wrangling\, and so on. They are ambiguous\, irrelevant to directivity\, but discordant sounds\, ubiquitous\, and real\, mixed.\nThe repeated waves are like the cancellation and return of history\, and we hope to add diverse faces to the ocean of history through the flexibility and imagination characteristic of art.” – Shaoan Huang

Curated by Yev Kravt\, this exhibition features 30 guest artists\, all exploring the intricate theme of “home” from diverse perspectives. \nJust a single letter differentiates home from hope; but does the notion of home exist without hope\, and can hope truly surface without a place to call home? The subject of belonging opens up a myriad of stories\, told in a multitude of ways. Home is a world we create\, where we can unapologetically be ourselves. Hope\, meanwhile\, speaks to a world set free\, brimming with possibilities. Whether our aspirations are personal or collectively shared\, our inherent ambition to strive forward and evolve ushers in visions of a brighter tomorrow. \nHOME/HOPE explores these intertwined notions\, telling tales through the works of 30 selected artists. The exhibition takes cues from several pressing questions: how might the definition of home be changing? What constitutes hope? In a globalised world\, our sense of home is fluid\, elusive and rich with potential. The HOME/HOPE exhibition spotlights new modes of (co)existence – and the boundless imagination that unites us\, wherever we may be.  \nSpecial performances in the exhibition space. Aukje Dekker and the SEXYLAND Collective will perform The Sea by Night (14-15 October)\, while Raida Adon will perform during the opening (14 October). DESCRIPTION:Mixed Media Exhibition: A group show by six Asian Artists \n“A name could be signified by a memory and in turn prompt a story\, it can compose identity\, or conjure character. This project’s aim is a group exhibition\, in a common site in Cyprus\, but also a name that has existed for hundreds of years\, thinking about the possibilities of resonating with foreign perspectives.\nArtists from diverse backgrounds will engage with local communities and look beyond borders. The artists not only work in local contexts\, but also trying to reply to the contemporary dilemmas common to the global.\nArtworks begin from the relationships developed in Cyprus\, exploring various dimensions like the role of the sea\, geopolitics\, historical diversity\, local industry\, and traditional crafts. From the artist’s memories and experiences in his own social relationships\, he summons different stories.\nThese stories look at the relationships and tensions hidden by the grand narrative\, such as the emotions erased by history\, the time lost in the wear\, the determination to preserve life in the conflicts and Political wrangling\, and so on. They are ambiguous\, irrelevant to directivity\, but discordant sounds\, ubiquitous\, and real\, mixed.\nThe repeated waves are like the cancellation and return of history\, and we hope to add diverse faces to the ocean of history through the flexibility and imagination characteristic of art.” – Shaoan Huang

DESCRIPTION:Discover the digital city of R’Thea\, a utopia built to host thousands of digital selves\, that eventually fell to chaos and disarray. Unravel the tangled narrative that connects scientists\, politicians and cultists\, and witness the true face of a mysterious entity that lies dormant beneath it. \nThe Fall of R’Thea is an immersive storytelling experience. You assume the roles of scientific investigators\, who\, after a distress signal sent by the inhabitants of the city\, have to uncover the truth behind what really happened in it. Immerse yourselves in the rich environment of the command center on Earth\, and awaken the city of R’Thea to be able to travel to it and explore its meandering roads. \nSuitable for individuals over the age of 16.\nPotential triggers: death\, emotional manipulation\, claustrophobia\, VR motion\, flashing lights \nThe experience is only for 5 people at a time and lasts for approximately one hour. Main language of experience is English. We kick off with Psychology\, followed by Environment\, Architecture and Design\, Philosophy\, and Space and Technology. Each week\, a different topic and lecturer explore the concept of ‘home’ from different perspectives\, concluding with a Q&A session. Attending is free\, just let us know that you are coming by RSVP? \nWeek 1: Psychology\nWe start with guest speaker\, Dr. Christakis Peristianis\, who boasts an interdisciplinary background merging sociology\, social/cultural history\, and human geography. Over the past seven years\, he has dedicated his research to the concept of ‘Home.’ His PhD work\, “Legacies of Displacement: The memories and meanings of home among a Greek Cypriot family\,” delves into what occurs when home vanishes\, leaving only memories.  \nWeek 2: Environment\nIt’s easy to forget that our primal home once thrived within the natural world\, deeply embedded within the environment. Dr. Maria Hadjimichael explores the ‘home’ theme from an environmental perspective. She is an interdisciplinary scientist in the field of marine and coastal governance\, with extensive academic and research experience. Currently\, she serves as a Senior Associate Scientist at CMMI\, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute. \nWeek 3: Architecture and Design\nDr. William Myer\, who combines the fields of environment and architecture and design\, will speak about BioDesign. His book\, “Biodesign” (2012\, 2018\, 2022 editions) published by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, identifies the emerging practice of integrating biological processes into design and architecture. Myer also serves as the Founding Director of the new Museum of 21st Century Design (M21D). \nWeek 4: Philosophy and Spirituality\nThis theme will be explored though an online session with contemporary philosopher and NYU professor Dr. Kwame Anthony Appiah. Dr. Appiah delves into his book\, “Lies that Bind Us: Rethinking Identity\,” challenging our assumptions about how identities function. He provides insights into the creation of identities amidst conflicts. The event will still take place at The Living Room with physical attendance. \nWeek 5: Space and Technology\nOur final discussion bridges space and technology through innovation. Dr. Nir Tsuk\, a seasoned practitioner\, academic\, and facilitator with over two decades of international experience in social capital\, entrepreneurship\, and the culture of innovation\, will lead this session. SUMMARY:Stellar Entanglement
DESCRIPTION:A Cinematic VR experience \n“Stellar Entanglement” (2019) is a VR film based on the immersive performance “The Evolution of Stars”. It tells the story of a mysterious scientific institute trying to secure the immortality of a civilization imprisoned on a doomed planet in a remote region of our Galaxy. However\, its main focus is the search of the place of the Universe inside Humans. The project resulted from the collaboration between the Instytut B61 and film directors duo The Kissinger Twins (Katarzyna Kifert & Dawid Marcinkowski). \nThe project not only deals with the issues of star evolution and quantum entanglement\, but also touches upon philosophical issues. “The connections between particles in the Universe\, says Jan Świerkowski\, do not differ from the connections between us. \n Is it possible\, however\, that some of us are contaminated with the same elements that constituted past civilizations?  \nIn the end\, as astronomers say\, each of us carries a souvenir of cosmic catastrophes – supernova explosions. If so\, is the fact that we are built of the same matter as the fiery nuclei of stars allows us to be called “children of stars” or is there something more needed?” \nInstytut B61 is an international art and science collective founded in Toruń during UNESCO’s International Year of Astronomy 2009 by artist\, astronomer and art curator Jan Świerkowski. The group members include scientists\, performers\, musicians\, visual artists\, actors\, as well as cultural managers. The group creates immersive site-specific performances and multimedia shows that combine art\, science and technology. Measuring seven metres in diameter\, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. SUMMARY:Cosmic Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Do not miss this keynote\, on how art enables us to engage with abstract scientific concepts\, from atoms to distant black holes\, beyond our sensory perception. \nJan Swierkowski\, the founder of Instytut B61\, an international collective bridging the realms of art and science\, will delve into the profound impact of these interactions. He’ll shed light on how these encounters can be transformative\, offering experiences that can reshape our perspective on life and philosophy. This shift in thinking is akin to the transformative Overview Effect that astronauts experience. \nDuring his presentation\, Swierkowski will elucidate his experimental approach\, which harmonizes art and science using cognitive metaphor theory and conceptual blending. Moreover\, he will guide us through the process of establishing successful artistic residencies. These residencies serve as collaborative spaces where artists and scientists convene to explore and translate the nuances of the Invisible World. \nJAN ŚWIERKOWSKI is a curator\, artist\, futurologist and astronomer. He graduated from astrophysics and concluded a dissertation in cultural studies. He’s been a recipient of scholarships from the Portuguese government (FCT) and the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Curated by Yev Kravt\, this exhibition features 30 guest artists\, all exploring the intricate theme of “home” from diverse perspectives. \nJust a single letter differentiates home from hope; but does the notion of home exist without hope\, and can hope truly surface without a place to call home? The subject of belonging opens up a myriad of stories\, told in a multitude of ways. Home is a world we create\, where we can unapologetically be ourselves. Hope\, meanwhile\, speaks to a world set free\, brimming with possibilities. Whether our aspirations are personal or collectively shared\, our inherent ambition to strive forward and evolve ushers in visions of a brighter tomorrow. \nHOME/HOPE explores these intertwined notions\, telling tales through the works of 30 selected artists. The exhibition takes cues from several pressing questions: how might the definition of home be changing? What constitutes hope?
