Who is artist Guillermo Basagoiti. Share with us a few things about you and your work in general.

I am based in the North of Spain, near Barcelona. My artistic practice is tightly interwoven in my personal life.

My work in general is based on exploring ways of materializing the impossible. I like to look for limits, resulting in very diverse work, but somehow always connected to something intimate. The materials I use can be anything, from daily objects to more unusual materials too.

What was your reaction when you heard that you where awarded?

When I heard we were awarded I was very pleased. To be able to participate in the Biennale and the whole experience was already so good, to be awarded was like the cherry on the cake!

“Desire” by Guillermo Basagoiti Brown
Award of Excellence Larnaca Biennale 2019

Tell us a few words about your awarded work.

The installation “Desire” is part of a larger project I am working on, called In Expansión. ‘Entities’ of topological forms, in large format, moving or static, contained or in process of expansion, capable of containing and alluding to the human condition.
Some of them exceeding the limit of their own material structure to the point of transformation, thus allowing us to appreciate their interior.
An artistic research on the perception of our reality through emotions.
Composed of air and materials that expand and contract. In this case the rubber of tractor chambers has been used to experiment with the different capacities and states of the matter that shapes us.

´In expansion´ is a work in progress.

We saw that the big glitter circle inspired many people to take pictures, it is good to see that people were intrigued by it.

What is your impression about this first Biennial in Cyprus?

Compared to other Biennials and exhibitions I presented my work the Larnaca Biennale stands out in a positive sense. The organization was so incredibly professional for such a small team of people. It is still a mystery to me how they were able to pull it off, with só many international artists and só many different works.

Tell us about your experience during your visit  in Larnaca.

Our experience was very positive, we spent a week in Larnaca building the installation. Cyprus in general was a surprise to us, we had never been there. The ambiance, team spirit (between the artists and with the staff) was perfect, making everything easy and flowing.

A message you would like to send to artists that will apply in the future for participation in Larnaca Biennale.

Prepare your things to the detail. This helps to organize everything better and prevents delays while you are on site. And apart from that; enjoy the adventure!
